Friday Catch Up #19

Giant Wheel in George Square. Not really the weather for it.

Is it possible to take a bad photo of a ferris wheel? It seems unlikely. I took this yesterday evening at George Square in the pouring freezing rain and it still looks lovely. This week I have mostly been working on an Exciting Thing, which you will be hearing more about soon. Also posting a lot of Valentine cards – I hope they were all appreciated by whoever you gave them to!

Things I Enjoyed This Week

A Passion for Mars by Andrew Chaikin / The Martian by Andy Weir
I don’t know why I’m reading two books about Mars just now – it’s not even my third favourite planet in the Solar System. I am avidly reading both though. A Passion For Mars is a big hardback history of Mars exploration and all the people who worked to make all the probes and rovers happen. I love this stuff (and his previous and brilliant book about the Apollo missions) and it’s full of great photos too, plus loads of amazing space art. The Martian just came out yesterday and is about a future Mars astronaut who gets left behind on a mission. The story is split between him trying to survive there and the NASA scientists trying to figure out how to get him back. It’s like a cross between the real life Apollo 13 mission and the movie Moon, but more light-hearted. I definitely recommend it so far.
