100 Days of Kawaii Characters – The Losers

Now I’ve finished my 100 Days of Kawaii Characters project, I thought it might be fun to look back on a few things. For the first post, I’m going to share my least favourite (and why) + the least popular (in terms of likes/comments). PS. There’s still time to vote for your favourites and help me decide which to make into products.

My Least Favourite Characters

With 100 ideas to come up with, there were bound to be a few duds. Looking through my whole folder though, I was surprised that I could only really pick 5. The rest aren’t perfect but I’m happy with them. Let’s count down my unfavourites.

5. Ghost Bunny

From early on when I was trying to post every day. It’s still cute but just a bit lazy.

4. New Cakeify

An attempt to draw my oldest character in my new style. I just can’t get get this to work. I drew some super cute cupcakes without arms and legs for another project, but the tiny arms and legs are my thing! I intended to give this another go before the end of the project, but totally forgot.

3. Lion

This is pretty cute but shows some of the problems of having a specific drawing style. I like to use simple symmetrical shapes that are still instantly recognisable but it makes this lion a bit bear-like around the ears and top of the head. It’s one of the reasons I don’t really enjoy drawing animals – food and objects are a lot more forgiving if you mess around with them. I like the face though.

2. Taiyaki

A similar issue with this one. It’s both too complicated and too simple. This might still turn up in a Japan pattern, as it will bug me less as a small design element.

1. Strawberries

I don’t know what it is about strawberries but they do not want to be cute in my drawing style! I tried so many different things and this was the point I gave up. I would normally have dumped this in the ‘try again some day’ folder but it’s been fun to share things I’m not totally happy with.

Least Popular: Lucky Bag

Not so lucky then! I get why – it’s not very interesting. This is something I’d been meaning to draw for ages so I can use it when I sell lucky bags in my shop or at craft markets. So, you’ll definitely see him again, whether you like it or not!
