I’m sharing some artwork from my school and college years. See all the posts here.
Looking back through all this artwork, the most depressing part was how glaringly obvious it is that I should have specialised in Textile Design. Look at the fun I’m having designing repeat patterns. Those white arrows are made of folded paper straws!
This project must have been about designing fabric for seats on public transport, surely.
London Underground patterns! I love this quite a lot. Why have I never done a diagonal stripe with my characters?
More work on repeats for 3D/Product Design. Those fish are by Roy Lichtenstein and I had forgotten how great that painting is. The flower pattern is from a tin I still own. Again, this is so weird to me now, playing around with other people’s artwork. Copying other artists is totally fine, as long as you don’t sell it, and it can push you in some fun new directions.
I turned those designs into giant hairslides! Bet you didn’t see that coming.
These two are still amazing. I made them into actual hairslides made of cardboard and metal brads and you could just about wear them.
So, yes, I’m an idiot. It was suggested that I go into textile design but I didn’t really understand the possibilities as I had no interest in designing clothes. At least I got there in the end.
Missing from the design side – my projects in interior design, which were so atrocious that I only just scraped a pass and must have thrown them all in the bin. I can’t say that I cared then or now.
Next time: I move to the Printmaking department.
