Making Mini Paintings, Part 1

I’m planning some special things for Asking For Trouble’s 15th anniversary next month and I thought I’d share some of the process of my mini paintings as I make them.

mini Posca pen painting

I bought myself some Posca pens for my birthday and the first thing I made was this planet painting on a mini canvas. I’d painted a few with these spacey backgrounds years ago and then never did anything with them! This one was a gift for my dad but I thought it would be fun to make more for my shop with different characters.

Obviously, the number to go for is 15 so I planned them out in Illustrator to make sure I’d have the right colours and they’d all be unique. I painted the backgrounds with acrylic paint as it makes for a nicer surface to draw on, and saves on Posca pen paint.

The great thing about these mini canvases is that you can brace your fingers inside and paint the whole thing in one go so it’s pretty quick to do. Now they’re ready to add some characters. The background is my old drawing board from art school, which still comes in very useful for messy projects like this.
