Reading
A Place of Greater Safety by Hilary Mantel 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I don’t know how she does this? Recreating years of history in minute detail and making it so alive and captivating. This is more experimental than Wolf Hall but I was still giddy reading it and had to keep stopping to highlight pages of dialogue. I only knew the basics of the French Revolution before this and I was in agonies of suspense over characters I adored. The final chapters are crushing *cries over fictionalised versions of real people who died hundreds of years ago*
Equator by Thurston Clarke ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is less a journey along the equator than a series of visits to a random selection of cities, towns and attractions close to the equator. It turns out you can’t really visit much of the equator (in the mid 80s at least) due to most of it being over ocean or jungle, and that most equatorial attractions have fallen into ruin due to a lack of interest and money. However he’s one of those people that talks to everyone and gets into absurd situations so it’s an entertaining read.
