My Year in Books

Here’s a look back at my 2021 reading challenge and my reading goals for 2022.

goodreads 2021

This is the first year that I failed my Goodreads reading challenge but I’m okay with it. I could have just read a comic on the 31st but it’s a personal challenge so why force it. I still read 51 books and that’s a pretty great result in a year like 2021. I also don’t count re-reads, of which there were rather a lot this year. Anyway, here’s a little breakdown.

  • Fiction: 26 / Non-Fiction: 19 / Comics: 6
  • 5 stars: 13 / 4 stars: 23 / 3 stars: 13 / Unrated: 2
  • You can read about them all on my Books, Comics & Zines I Read in 2021 page, now fully updated.

I don’t know if I read more diversely because how do people find that information without researching every book? I don’t even know the gender of some of the authors. Obviously, you can choose diverse authors in advance but my big goal last year was to read from my Unread folder and not buy new books.

And how did that go? Not great! I started out with 58 books in my Unread folder and now somehow I have 60, split over 2 folders. I also failed at all my other goals so not the best year for reading. BUT I read some incredible books this year, and discovered some new favourite authors so who really cares.

2022 Challenge

I’m having a no plans and goals year for 2022 but I still want the stats you get for setting a reading challenge so I’ve set it to 36 books. I should easily be able to do that and instead of feeling bad that I failed by 1 book, I can just be happy with whatever the final number is. If you’re doing a Goodreads reading challenge this year, feel free to friend me.

I’d also like to read mostly from my Unread folders, read the 2 books I got for Christmas and sort out my bookshelves so that all my books fit tidily. That will likely mean getting rid of some books but I’m due a clearout anyway.
